Faith Hall of Fame

When I read fictional books, I always identify with the protagonist or other characters in the story. I put myself in their shoes and root for them to overcome any adversities they may face. I think about the traits we have in common or find myself wishing to be like them in some way. Anne of Green Gables was one of my favorites growing up, and I longed to have Anne’s feisty spirit and imagination!

I tend to read the Bible in a similar way, connecting to the characters and sharing in their highs and lows. I am greatly encouraged to know that these were real people, just like you and me. Moses had some serious doubts about his speaking ability (see Exodus 4:10-17), but God still chose him to face Pharaoh and be the leader of His people. Sarah often tried to take situations into her own hands instead of waiting on the Lord’s timing. King David committed adultery and murder. The list could go on.

These people clearly didn’t have it all together; they struggled with sin and at times fell from the Lord. They experienced hardships, were tested by God, but were also used by Him in mighty ways! Moses performed miraculous signs and wonders and led the Israelites out of slavery. He alone was allowed to approach the Lord on Mount Sinai and stayed in His presence for forty days and nights. Sarah became the mother of the Jewish nation and is included in the Hebrews 11 “Faith Hall of Fame.” David, a mere shepherd boy, defeated Goliath and became a powerful military leader and king. God declared him “a man after my own heart,” and as we read through his psalms it is easy to see why.

These are just a few of the many Biblical characters that encourage us in our faith as believers. We don’t need to “have it all together” to be chosen and used by God. The Lord uses our weaknesses and sins to reveal His strength and character. Unlike us, God’s character does not change. His love and faithfulness is not dependent on our actions. He is the God of His Word and follows through with His promises.

Ephesians 3:20 states, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever!”

I pray that we would step out boldly in faith as we ask the Lord to work through us, that we would not allow fear or doubt to settle. May we know how powerful and precious we are as His daughters and dare to imagine what He can do! As Anne of Green Gables would say, “Because when you are imagining, you might as well imagine something worth while.”
